Monroe county covers approximately 653 square miles, and of the amount roughly 636 square miles is land and approximately 17 square miles is water. The Unicoi Mountains, part of the greater Blue Ridge chain, cover a large portion of the southeastern part of the county. The peak of this range marks Monroe’s boundaries with Graham and Cherokee counties located in North Carolina.
