Stephens County is a county located in the northeastern part of Georgia. Stunning scenery amid Northeast Georgia’s gentle peaks and rushing waters makes Stephens County and the surrounding area a natural paradise for visitors. Bridge the gap between past and present and enjoy the sheer beauty of the Northeast Mountains, natural treasures and small-town delights. The mountains will provide you with a simple escape the daily stresses.  Tucked into the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, Stephens County is known for its ruggedness and scenic beauty. Among the most scenic areas of the county are the 900-foot-high Currahee Mountain, the last mountain in the Blue Ridge Mountain chain, and 186-foot-high Toccoa Falls.

Originally inhabited by Mississippi Indian mound builders and then by Cherokee Indians, the first non-Indians in the area were Revolutionary War veterans who migrated up the Savannah River and the Tugaloo River after the war. Created on August 18, 1905 from parts of Franklin County and Habersham County, the county is named for Alexander Stephens, U.S. representative, Vice President of the Confederate States of America, and fifty-third governor of Georgia.
