Rockwood is located in Roane County which was formed in 1801 and named for Archibald Roane, the second Governor of Tennessee. The city is situated at the base of the eastern edge of the Cumberland Plateau, which is locally known as Walden Ridge. The boundary between the Eastern Time Zone and Central Time Zone also runs along Rockwood’s western boundary. Watts Bar Lake with it’s connection to the Tennessee River provides much of Rockwood’s southern boundary. Rockwood is also situated around a series of roads that intersect U.S. Route 70 between its junction with State Route 29 in the northeast and State Route 27 to the southwest.
